International Adoption might be for you
If you've been contemplating adoption, you might want to take a look at agencies that specialize in international adoption. There are many reasons why international adoption is a good option for families. Although there are children for adoption through the domestic foster care system in the United States, it is difficult for some families to work within that system. Especially if you and your spouse are "older" than the traditional age of parents of young children, but you have a heart for orphans, international adoption is much more accessible to you. Also, if you want to adopt a younger child, again international adoption might be a good choice for your family. Whether you choose domestic adoption or international adoption, there is the probability that yours will be a "blended family," and there are so many communities of adoptive families that you will be in good company! When my husband and I decided to pursue international adoption, we had already raised eight biological children (four each from previous marriages), and we were by then "older" parents. But not TOO old to have room in our hearts and our home for our two beautiful daughters, adopted from China. I believe that the cost of an international adoption is comparable to that of a domestic adoption, with travel expenses comprising the major portion of the cost for our China adoptions. And it seems to me, with the laws in this country regarding "open" adoptions, and the birth mother having the opportunity to choose the adoptive parents for her biological child, that my husband and I would never have been chosen, because of our ages. Of course, there are potential difficulties with international adoption, as with any adoption. Or with the raising of any child, adoptive or biological. As parents of both biological as well as adoptive children, we know that all of our children have minds of their own, and there are no guarantees of anything! We've probably all heard horror stories of adoptive families and children with attachment or bonding issues. Or adoptions where the parents arrived in the country of their child's birth, only to discover that there were health or mental issues that were not revealed to the parents prior to traveling to bring their child home. And there are some countries where the government requires that the parents travel twice to see their child before the adoption can be completed. I've even heard of families arriving in the country to bring their child home, only to face extortion. Once the parents have traveled all the way around the world, they are told that in order to secure the finalization of the adoption of their child, it will cost them an additional $2,000 - $5,000. Most of the problems of this type that I have heard about from adoptive families have been from Eastern European countries, but I'm sure that it could happen anywhere. Our experience with China was very positive, and yet it was heartbreaking to see the desperate poverty in the villages where our daughters were born. The Chinese people were gracious, humble, gentle, friendly and kind. And they care so much for their babies! We had many kind-hearted Chinese people stop us on the street or in an elevator, and express their gratitude that we were adopting an orphan from their country. There is such a need, all around the world, for families for these orphans. So, if you have a heart for these babies, who need the love and security of a mom and dad, please consider international adoption. |
